Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college. Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

The Pi Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated was chartered on August 7th, 1964 in San Bernardino, CA. Charter members include: Harry S. Davis, Farriel Dobard, Marion C. Garrett, Atwood L. Gradberry, Philmore Graham, Harry H. Holder, De Forest Jackson, Talmage D. Kirkmon, and Havard Glenn.
The 12th District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. has featured the extraordinary life and contributions of Pi Rho's very own Brother Dr. L. Benjamin Livingston, a pillar of leadership, service, and scholarship in this months African American Life and History Tribute.
From his roots in Oklahoma to earning his PhD in Psychology, Dr. Livingston was a dedicated educator, psychologist, and community leader. As the first 12th District Grand Basileus, "Ben the Big Q of the Desert" exemplified the ideals of Omega Psi Phi with passion and commitment.
Rest in Power, Brother Livingston (1931–2005). Your legacy continues to inspire!
